On the mechanism of the hofmeister effect
Web15 de ago. de 2024 · Specific Ion Effects and the Hofmeister Series The degree of salting-out, reflecting the activity coefficient of the aqueous solution, is sometimes attributed to aqueous ionic strength, as Debye–Hückel theory provides a direct mathematical link. Web1 de out. de 2004 · This study provides new scientific bases of Hofmeister effects at the sub-atomic level, which is of critical importance in both physical and biological systems.

WebStarting from known properties of non-specific salt effects on the surface tension at an air–water interface, we propose the first general, detailed qualitative molecular mechanism for the origins of ion-specific (Hofmeister) effects on the surface potential difference at an air–water interface; this mechanism suggests a simple model for the … WebSuch specific ion effects are well-known and are classified among the “Hofmeister effects”. However, there has been little awareness of them, or of their potential for optimization of activities in the enzyme community. Rather than the effects per se, the focus here is on their origin. New insights into mechanism are proposed. 1 ...
Web15 de jan. de 2010 · A new, adsorption-based mechanism of potentiometric response of the plasticized PVC membranes is proposed. In contrast to previous mechanistic studies of the membrane-based Ion-Selective Electrodes (ISE), the membranes in this study did not contain any purposely-added additives: lipophilic salt or ionophore. WebSuch mechanistic action led to a lower degree of destabilization, promoting surface tension effects that stabilized myoglobin according to the Hofmeister series. Therefore, we demonstrate that Hofmeister effects on protein stability are modulated by the heterogeneous physico-chemical nature of the unfolded state.
