When I played Germany it was a breeze, normal difficulty historical focus and even though trying to be historical I easily defeated continental allies by 1939 and USSR by 1942 and a successful sealion in 1944. Just because OP did a run without air and easily won doesn't mean air is trash. I prefer ignoring AA and focusing on guns, artillery, support, trucks and planes.
